Astrology Tool — Birth Chart, Horoscope, and Planetary Positions
Astrology has been part of Indian culture for thousands of years — from choosing wedding dates and naming ceremonies to daily horoscope readings and career decisions. Whether you approach it as a cultural tradition, a psychological framework, or pure curiosity, this tool provides birth chart calculations, planetary positions, and interpretations based on your birth details.
Vedic vs. Western astrology
There are two major astrological systems. Western astrology (the kind behind Aries, Taurus, Gemini in newspaper horoscopes) uses the tropical zodiac — based on the seasons, with Aries starting at the March equinox. Vedic astrology (Jyotish) uses the sidereal zodiac — based on the actual positions of constellations. Because the Earth's axis wobbles over time (precession), the two systems have drifted about 23–24 degrees apart. This means your sun sign in Vedic astrology is often one sign behind your Western sun sign. Most Indians practicing astrology use the Vedic system; Western horoscopes in English-language media use the tropical system.
This distinction matters because your "sign" — and all the interpretations attached to it — depends entirely on which system is being applied. If you've always read about being a Scorpio in Western horoscopes, your Vedic chart may show Libra.
The birth chart (Kundli)
A birth chart — called a Kundli or Janam Kundli in the Vedic tradition — is a map of the sky at the exact moment and location of your birth. It shows where the Sun, Moon, and planets were positioned across the 12 zodiac signs and houses. Each planet represents a domain of life, each sign adds qualities to that planet, and each house governs a specific area (health, wealth, relationships, career, etc.). The interactions between planets — their aspects and conjunctions — form the basis of detailed astrological readings.
How to use this tool
Enter your date of birth, exact time of birth, and place of birth. The birth time matters significantly — even a few minutes can change your rising sign (Lagna/Ascendant), which is considered as important as your sun sign in Vedic astrology. If you don't know your exact birth time, most birth certificates in India list it; hospital records are another source. Without a birth time, rising sign and house-based readings will be unavailable or approximate.
Common use cases
Daily, weekly, and monthly horoscopes: Many people consult their moon sign or sun sign horoscopes regularly. In Vedic astrology, the moon sign (Rashi) is particularly emphasised — it's considered more important than the sun sign for day-to-day predictions.
Kundli matching (Guna Milan): Traditional marriage compatibility assessment in India involves comparing the birth charts of prospective partners. The Guna Milan system assigns points across 8 factors (called Ashtakoota) based on the moon sign and nakshatra of both individuals. A score of 18 or above out of 36 is generally considered acceptable for marriage.
Muhurta (auspicious timing): Choosing favourable dates for weddings, house purchases, business launches, or travel based on planetary positions. This is taken seriously in many Indian families even among those who don't otherwise follow astrology closely.
Nakshatra and naam rashi: In traditional practice, a child's name is chosen based on the nakshatra (lunar mansion) they were born in, which is derived from the moon's position at birth. Parents use birth charts to identify the appropriate starting syllables for the name.
Career and life guidance: Astrological consultation around career decisions, relocation, or major life changes is common in India, particularly around transition points like finishing education or changing jobs.
Tips
Accuracy of the birth time is the most important input for a precise chart. If you have a birth certificate with the time listed in IST (Indian Standard Time), use that directly — India has a single time zone, so no conversion is needed for births within the country.
Nakshatras (the 27 lunar mansions) are central to Vedic astrology in a way that has no direct parallel in Western astrology. Your nakshatra — determined by the moon's position within the zodiac — influences personality, compatible names, auspicious activities, and more.
Limitations
Astrology is a traditional interpretive system, not a predictive science in the empirical sense. The calculations — planetary positions, house cusps, aspects — are astronomically accurate. The interpretations attached to those positions are part of a traditional framework, not empirically verified predictions. Use the chart for cultural, traditional, or reflective purposes, and make major life decisions based on practical factors rather than astrological readings alone.
Kundli matching alone is not a complete compatibility assessment — two people with "good" Guna Milan scores may still be incompatible as partners. Modern astrologers increasingly combine traditional chart analysis with more practical compatibility considerations.
Frequently Asked Questions
The Kundli generator uses standard Vedic astrology calculations based on your birth date, time, and place. For a fully precise chart, exact birth time and location are important. The results here are indicative and intended for general guidance.
No. All calculations happen entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your name, date of birth, and location are never sent to any server or stored anywhere. Your data is 100% private.
Your life path number is calculated by summing all digits of your full birth date and reducing to a single digit (unless it's a master number: 11, 22, or 33). For example: 15 April 1990 = 1+5+0+4+1+9+9+0 = 29 → 2+9 = 11 (master number, kept as-is).
Cards are randomly selected from the 22 Major Arcana using your browser's built-in random number generator. Each draw is unique. About 30% of cards may appear reversed, which gives them an alternative meaning.
