How to Use

1

Select a Category

Click one of the category tabs at the top — Length, Weight, Temperature, Speed, or Area — to load the relevant unit options. The selectors update instantly to show only the units for that category.

2

Choose Your Units

Select the "From" unit on the left and the "To" unit on the right from the dropdown menus. Click the swap button between them to instantly reverse the conversion direction.

3

Enter a Value

Type any number into the value field. The result updates instantly as you type — no button press required. The conversion formula is shown below the result for transparency.

The converted value is displayed in large text. Very large or very small numbers are shown in scientific notation for clarity. Change any input at any time for a fresh conversion.

Unit Converter — Convert Length, Weight, Temperature, Area, Speed, and More

Unit conversion sounds simple until you need to do it under pressure — when a recipe uses cups and tablespoons but you only have a kitchen scale in grams, when a foreign job listing specifies a salary in a unit you're not familiar with, or when you're coding and need to convert pixels to points. This converter handles the most common measurement categories with accurate conversion factors.

Supported categories

Length: Millimetres, centimetres, metres, kilometres, inches, feet, yards, miles, and nautical miles. The most frequently needed conversions: metres to feet, kilometres to miles, centimetres to inches.

Weight / Mass: Milligrams, grams, kilograms, metric tonnes, ounces, pounds, and stones. Common needs: kilograms to pounds for international fitness trackers, grams to ounces for cooking and postal weighing.

Temperature: Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin. The classic Celsius-to-Fahrenheit conversion that every Indian who's ever read an American weather forecast or oven instruction needs.

Area: Square millimetres, centimetres, metres, kilometres, acres, square feet, square inches, and square yards. Critical for real estate: understanding apartment sizes in square feet vs square metres, or plot sizes in acres vs bigha (though bigha varies by state and isn't a standard unit).

Volume: Millilitres, litres, cubic metres, fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts, and gallons. For cooking and liquid measurement conversions.

Speed: Kilometres per hour, miles per hour, metres per second, feet per second, and knots. Useful for understanding speed limits in different countries or specifications in mixed-unit contexts.

Data storage: Bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes — and the IEC-standard binary variants (kibibytes, mebibytes, etc.).

Time: Seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, and years — for converting durations.

Common use cases in India

Real estate: Property sizes in India are quoted in square feet, square yards, or occasionally in "guntha" or "bigha" (regional units). When comparing international properties or reading construction specifications, converting to square metres is often necessary. ₹6,500 per square foot is roughly ₹70,000 per square metre.

Cooking from foreign recipes: American recipes use cups, tablespoons, and teaspoons, plus temperatures in Fahrenheit. Convert the liquid volumes to millilitres and temperature to Celsius before following along.

Vehicle fuel efficiency: European cars quote fuel efficiency in litres per 100km; American specs use miles per gallon. These aren't direct inverses — convert between them here to compare like with like.

International shopping: Clothing sizes, shoe sizes, and bag weight limits from international airlines often use imperial units. Convert quickly before ordering or packing.

Fitness and health: Many fitness apps, international weight standards, and body weight references use pounds. Convert your weight and measurements between kilograms and pounds.

Tips

For temperature conversion, remember the quick mental estimates: 0°C = 32°F (freezing), 20°C = 68°F (comfortable room temperature), 37°C = 98.6°F (normal body temperature), 100°C = 212°F (boiling).

Data storage units have two different conventions. Hard drive manufacturers use decimal kilobytes (1 KB = 1,000 bytes), while operating systems often use binary kibibytes (1 KiB = 1,024 bytes). This is why a "500 GB" hard drive appears as slightly less in Windows — it's reporting in GiB.

Limitations

This converter handles universal SI and imperial units. It doesn't cover regional Indian units (tola, seer, maund, katha, bigha) that vary by state and don't have standardised conversion factors. For those, look up the specific convention for your region.

Currency conversion is not included here — exchange rates change constantly and require live data. Use a currency converter app or your bank for current rates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Results are computed using JavaScript’s 64-bit floating-point arithmetic (IEEE 754 double precision), giving up to 15–17 significant decimal digits of precision. The output is formatted to 8 significant figures for readability. For scientific or engineering work requiring extreme precision beyond this, dedicated software is recommended.

Temperature conversions are handled separately because temperature scales use offsets, not simple multiplication factors. The tool converts the input to Celsius as an intermediate step, then converts from Celsius to the target scale. Formulas: °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32; K = °C + 273.15. The formula used is displayed below the result for every conversion.

The converter supports: Length — meter, kilometer, centimeter, millimeter, mile, yard, foot, inch, nautical mile. Weight — kilogram, gram, milligram, pound, ounce, metric ton, stone. Temperature — Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin. Speed — m/s, km/h, mph, knot, ft/s. Area — square meter, square kilometer, square mile, square yard, square foot, square inch, hectare, acre.

Scientific notation (e.g., 1.23456e+9) is used automatically when the result is either extremely large (greater than 1 billion) or extremely small (less than 0.0001). This prevents the display of unwieldy strings of zeros while preserving the full precision of the result.

Yes. The conversion factors used in this tool are based on the definitions established by the International System of Units (SI) and internationally accepted exact values. For example, 1 inch is exactly 0.0254 meters, 1 mile is exactly 1609.344 meters, and 1 pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms.
